These monotype sketches refer to a black and white reproduction of an untraced watercolour ‘Solway Sands’ by Scottish artist Edward Arthur Walton (1860-1922), painted during the first world war while issued with a Defence of the Realm Permit Book, enabling him to paint with a five mile radius of New Abbey and Carsethorn.
