Studies for Raeburn is an ongoing series of paintings composed from the landscape backgrounds of the portraits of Henry Raeburn (1756-1823). Landscapes he imagined from his studio1 were only allowed ‘to peep from behind his patron’s elbow.’2 Studies for Raeburn are fragments of imaginary landscapes annexed from his
paintings, but suggestive of somewhere, however indistinct.
